A Day Turtle

Friday, August 10th

In the morning, Andrea and I rearranged and organized the patrol kits. Now, they are all numbered and labeled, so that it will be harder to misplace things. Before I would make patrol kits and parts of it would disappear, so this new system is better. I’m looking forward to explaining it to everyone.

Later in the day, the wind really started to pick up. Now that it is later in the season, when it is windy during the day sometimes turtles will come up to nest. A couple of us decided to sit on the beach right outside of the parque to watch for turtles. Two volunteers were sitting close to some parlameros, so they decided to move farther away. About 5 minutes later, a turtle came up and the parlameros got the turtle. We talked to them and they agreed to give us a donation. After about 10 minutes, the turtle looked like she wasn’t going to nest, so the parlamero grabbed the turtle, flipped her over his head, and carried her onto ARCAS property. It is so sad the way they treat these turtles sometimes. It really upset one of the volunteers, so he demanded that they give a 20% donation instead of the usual dozen because it was on our property. However, the parlameros refused and we just got a dozen eggs.

After the whole turtle ordeal, we started cooking a big dinner. We decided to make 3 different soups using a mixture of all of our vegetables because a couple of the volunteers were leaving and wanted to get rid of their food. It was fun having a big dinner with everyone! We also had fun rating all of the different soups from best to worst. It was a good send off for some of the volunteers.
